Acrolein

“The principal anthropogenic source of atmospheric acrolein is the combustion of organic matter and fuels, with motor vehicles (including aircraft) generating most of the acrolein emissions." https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/publications/healthy-living/residential-indoor-air-quality-guidelines-acrolein.html#a5.1.2

Benzene

Industrial pollution - given off when petrol put into cars, industrial solvent, ethylbenzene, cumene, cyclohexane, styrene, phenol, nylon, synthetic detergents, dyes, paints, varnish removers, adhesives, pharmaceuticals.

1,3-Butadiene

An important industrial chemical used as in the production of synthetic rubber.

Butyl Acrylate

Butyl acrylate is a colorless liquid used as a raw material for fiber processing agents, adhesives, coatings, plastics, acrylic rubber, and emulsions.

Carbon Dioxide

Also a by-product of vinyl chloride when it is burned.

Carbon Monoxide

Also a by-product of vinyl chloride when it is burned

Dioxins

Dioxins are called persistent organic pollutants (POPs), meaning they take a long time to break down once they are in the environment. Dioxins are highly toxic and can cause cancer, reproductive and developmental problems, damage to the immune system, and can interfere with hormones.” Dioxins are released in burning fuels. https://www.epa.gov/dioxin/learn-about-dioxin https://www.cdc.gov/biomonitoring/DioxinLikeChemicals_FactSheet.html

Furans

Exposure to dioxins and furans has been associated with a wide range of adverse health effects in humans and laboratory animals. The type and frequency of adverse reactions generally depend on the duration and level of exposure…. The large-scale incineration of municipal and medical waste is the largest source of dioxins and furans in Canada. https://www.enviro-option.com/en/dioxins-and-furans

Hydrogen Chloride Gas

Hydrogen chloride has many uses, including cleaning, pickling, electroplating metals, tanning leather, and refining and producing a wide variety of products. Hydrogen chloride can be formed during the burning of many plastics. Upon contact with water, it forms hydrochloric acid. Both hydrogen chloride and hydrochloric acid are corrosive. https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxfaqs/tfacts173.pdf

Indoor Air Pollution Mix

50 chemicals commonly found (and of concern) in indoor air pollution including 2-propanol, n-undecane, styrene, acetone, m-xylene, etc.

Isobutylene

Butane can be derived from mined natural gas and turned into tert-Butyl alcohol, which can then be turned into isobutylene. It is used in gasoline and rubber. Butyl rubber is in chewing gum, cling film, window sealant, tires and more. https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/did-you-know/i-keep-hearing-isobutylene-newswhat-heck-it

Naphthalene

Dyestuff intermediates, plasticizers, alkyd resins, polyesters, moth balls.

Naphthalene Fumes

o– Xylene

Ortho-xylene is primarily used as a solvent (a liquid that can dissolve other substances) in the printing, rubber, and leather industries. Along with other solvents, xylene is also widely used as a cleaning agent, a thinner for paint, and in varnishes

Phosgene Gas

Created when vinyl chloride is burned. It is a colorless to yellowish gas with a strong odor and is known to cause skin, eye, nose and throat irritation.

Trichloroethylene

Trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) are chlorinated solvents with a broad range of applications in industrial and other settings. TCE and PCE are used in the production of other solvents, dry cleaning of fabrics, and metal degreasing.13 Due to their volatility, human exposures to TCE and PCE are assumed to be mainly through inhalation (either through direct contact or vapor intrusion); both chemicals are also commonly found in ground and drinking water. https://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/doi/10.1289/EHP12006

Trichloroethylene Fumes

Vinyl Chloride

Vinyl chloride is used primarily to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a hard plastic resin used to make a variety of plastic products, including pipes, wire and cable coatings, and packaging materials.

Vinyl Chloride is a highly toxic, colorless gas, with a sweet odor that is usually handled as a liquid under pressure. It is highly flammable and when burned could break down into hydrogen chloride, phosgene, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide vapors, according to the American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/0002889718506429

Vinyl Chloride Plasticizer

Almost 90% of polymer plasticizers, most commonly phthalate esters are used in PVC, giving this material improved flexibility and durability. The majority is used in films and cables… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasticizer

Xylene Fumes

Xylene is primarily used as a solvent (a liquid that can dissolve other substances) in the printing, rubber, and leather industries. Along with other solvents, xylene is also widely used as a cleaning agent, a thinner for paint, and in varnishes.
