French physician Paul Nogier (1908-1996) developed auriculotherapy in 1950s. Nogier posited that the auricle, the visible, outer flap of the ear made of skin and flexible cartilage, is a kind of map. He suggested that zones and points on this ear map correspond with specific tissues and organs of the body. Further, these zones of the ear and the body react to the same pulsed frequencies.
Nogier believed that the frequencies correspond to the three germ layers of embryonic development (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm), which dictate which organs and structures they influence. Nogier discovered the relationship between the auricle and the body using a technique he called RAC, or réflexe auriculo-cardiaque (auriculo-cardiac reflex). RAC is a transient, involuntary change in a patient's radial pulse that occurs when a specific point on the ear (or skin) is stimulated with pressure, light, or frequencies. While the patient's heart rate stays the same, the radial pulse at the wrist temporarily changes.
Again, by stimulating the skin using light emitted by a diode and hertz by hertz adjustments, Nogier discovered and mapped the areas of the auricle that reacted identically to certain frequencies. In this way, Nogier identified seven main frequencies (A through G) that when used with the RAC feedback mechanism at ear or skin would indicate an imbalance. Nogier used lasers or microcurrent at these areas and at these frequencies to help restore balance.
